Politicians always want more taxes, but this year our school district's “wish list” gives no consideration or compassion to the heavy load already impacting families and local businesses.

They don't tell you your property taxes for schools already took a huge jump higher on January 1st!

That's right, every homeowner and commercial property owner will be paying a permanent state tax increase of $.90 per $1000 assessed value that started on January 1st dedicated to school funding. Of course, every renter and leaseholder will be getting rent increases to cover their share. For the median homeowner in our district, that's a $900 increase this year and additional increases each year as home values increase. That impacts everyone's budget but especially hurts those on fixed incomes and further reduces affordable housing in our community.

They ignore the terrible impact Covid has had and is still having on our families and local businesses.

Every family and every local business is hurting due to the Covid pandemic. Some have suffered terrible losses – loss of a family member or on-going medical complications, others healthcare costs, the interruption of family lives and routines, impacts from isolation and the stress and worry about health conditions. We can easily look around and see the impacts on our local businesses too – some have closed or gone bankrupt, others are struggling to operate safely with health concerns for both customers and staff as well as reduced sales revenue and supply chain shortages.

This is not the time to INCREASE local property taxes again!

But that's what the Lake Washington School administration wants to do to you!

Here's what their three levy propositions will do:

Levy 1 claims to simply replace current “enrichment” spending in the district but in fact is a 26% INCREASE in spending.

Levy 2 claims to simply replace current “facility and technology” spending, but again the district is INCREASING such spending by 21%.

Levy 3 is a brand new 6 year levy for “construction and property acquisition” that INCREASES taxes by starting now while we still have three more years to pay for on the current 6 year construction levy. It also lacks specific commitments for what projects or properties will be funded, making it virtually impossible for taxpayers to hold the district accountable for the eventual spending.

We believe these proposed levies are EXCESSIVE and should be REJECTED.
